Lusiana की कहानी

The Altopiano dei Sette Comuni

Lusiana lies within the Altopiano dei Sette Comuni, a vast mountain plateau in the Vicenza Prealps that also includes Asiago, Roana, Rotzo, Foza, Gallio and Enego, alongside Lusiana itself. The plateau formed on limestone bedrock, with average elevations above a thousand metres and a landscape dominated by spruce and beech woods alternating with meadows and pastures. Historically, the Sette Comuni enjoyed centuries of administrative autonomy, the so-called Reggenza, which left traces in the local identity still perceptible today. Lusiana's position, further south than the heart of the plateau around Asiago, gives it a role as a gateway from the Vicenza plain up to the mountains.

Lusiana's Cimbrian roots

The Altopiano dei Sette Comuni, including the Lusiana area, is historically linked to the Cimbrian presence, a community of Germanic origin that settled on these mountains starting in the Middle Ages. The Cimbrian language, related to ancient German dialects, left its mark especially in local place names, in many names of hamlets, mountains and trails that still preserve Germanic roots alongside Venetian ones. Over the centuries the everyday use of the language gradually declined, but the memory of this origin remains alive through cultural initiatives, ethnographic museums spread across the plateau, and the oral transmission of traditions, songs and trades tied to Cimbrian mountain culture.

Woods, pastures and mountain life

The landscape around Lusiana alternates conifer and broadleaf woods with pastures and permanent meadows, a mosaic typical of the Veneto Prealps. Livestock farming and alpine dairy production remain present on the plateau, with cheeses and dairy products that are part of the local food tradition. Forestry, historically important to the area's economy, continues to characterise much of the municipal territory, also providing the setting for numerous hiking trails. The elevation and mountain climate make Lusiana a cool destination in summer, when the Vicenza plain suffers the heat, and a snowy one in winter, with conditions that allow snow activities even without the tourist fame of Asiago.

Lusiana Conco, a municipality born from a merger

Since 2019 Lusiana has merged with the neighbouring municipality of Conco to create Lusiana Conco, a single administration bringing together two adjoining territories of the southern plateau. The merger allowed municipal services to be streamlined while still keeping the historic identities of the two communities distinct, each with its own hamlets, churches and local traditions. This kind of merger, common among several Veneto mountain municipalities in recent years, responds to the need to sustain public services in territories with a small population spread over a large mountain area. For visitors, Lusiana remains the most widely used and recognisable place name for the northern part of the new municipality.

Outdoor life on the plateau

The Altopiano dei Sette Comuni, and with it the Lusiana area, has long been a destination for those seeking outdoor activities away from the busier flows of Dolomite mountain tourism. Trails crossing woods and pastures are suited to hiking and mountain biking, while in winter the snowy areas allow cross-country skiing and snowshoe walks. Its proximity to the Vicenza plain makes Lusiana easily reachable even for day trips, offering a significant change of altitude and climate within a short journey. This combination of accessibility and a still uncrowded landscape is one of the area's strengths.
