In the heart of the Valbelluna
Mel lies at the centre of the Valbelluna, equidistant from Belluno and Feltre, in a scenic spot overlooking the valley surrounded by the Belluno Dolomites and the Prealps. Since 2019 it has no longer been an independent municipality, but the main hamlet of Borgo Valbelluna, created through the merger with the neighbouring municipalities of Trichiana and Lentiai, over which it nonetheless retains a historic and symbolic reference role. The historic centre sits on a slight rise, with a compact urban layout that has preserved over time the appearance of an old Venetian borgo, still recognisable today in the arrangement of streets around the main square.
The Paleo-Venetian necropolis
Just below the hill on which the village stands, one of the most important Paleo-Venetian necropolises in the Belluno area was discovered in the 1960s, with finds datable between the 8th and 5th centuries BC. The archaeological area includes around eighty tombs and seven funerary enclosures, four of which are still visible on site, while the materials found, including grave goods and bronze and ceramic objects, are preserved in the Civic Archaeological Museum. It is a precious and little-known testimony on a national scale, showing that this valley was already inhabited and frequented in pre-Roman times, well before the medieval settlement we know today developed here.
Castello di Zumelle
In the hamlet of Villa di Villa, just outside the centre of Mel, stands the Castello di Zumelle, perched on a rocky outcrop and considered the only fortification in the Valbelluna to have survived to this day in an almost intact state. Its origins are linked to the struggles between Ostrogoths and Byzantines, when the castle was built to guard the pass, positioned symmetrically to the nearby Castelvint. In the 13th century it reached its maximum expansion, with four walls, two moats and four towers; the current structure largely reflects the reconstruction commissioned by Rizzardo da Camino in 1311. It is from the castle's name, derived from the Latin gemellus, that the very toponym of Mel derives, indicating the ancient rivalry between the two twin fortresses.
The square and the historic palaces
The historic centre of Mel revolves around an elegant arcaded square, considered one of the most beautiful in the province of Belluno, closed on several sides by noble palaces of the Venetian era, among which the Palazzo delle Contesse stands out. The combination of facades, arcades and small side streets conveys the image of a village that, despite its modest size, held a significant administrative and social role in the Valbelluna under the rule of the Republic of Venice. It is no coincidence that Mel has been awarded the Orange Flag by the Touring Club Italiano and recognised as one of Italy's Most Beautiful Villages, a distinction that rewards precisely the quality and harmony of this well-preserved historic fabric.
Between the Dolomites and the Prealps
Beyond its historical heritage, Mel offers an excellent starting point for exploring the landscape of the Valbelluna, with views of the Belluno Dolomites on one side and the Prealps on the other. The hamlets scattered across the municipal territory, such as Villa di Villa, Ceresera or Zorzoi, retain a rural character and are connected by a network of secondary roads suited to walks and cycling excursions, in a hilly agricultural landscape of vineyards, apple orchards and hay meadows. It is a setting that invites visitors to slow down, far from the major tourist flows of the more crowded Dolomite valleys, yet capable of offering sweeping views.
