حكاية Calvene
A village between the plain and the plateau
Calvene occupies a hinge position in the Vicenza foothills: it borders Asiago to the north, Lugo di Vicenza to the east and south, and Caltrano and Chiuppano to the west. The Astico stream marks part of its territory, which covers just over a thousand hectares of gentle hillsides and the first buttresses towards the Sette Comuni plateau. It is a transitional landscape, less dramatic than the higher altitudes but pleasant to walk through, with views over cultivated hills and woods climbing towards Asiago. For those arriving from the plain, Calvene is often the first stop before tackling the climb up to the plateau.
From Roman stones to the Serenissima
The earliest traces of settlement in Calvene date back to Roman times, evidenced by gravestones and coins from the Republican and Imperial periods found during local excavations. The first certain mentions of the village, however, date to 914: in the following centuries the territory was donated to the convent of Santo Stefano in Padua and granted in fief by the bishops of Padua to local lords, before passing under the municipality of Vicenza. In 1404 Calvene became part of the dominions of the Republic of Venice, sharing its fate until the fall of the Serenissima. It is a history common to many foothill villages, but still legible today in the layout of the old centre.
Waterfalls and mills along the Chiavona
One of Calvene's most characteristic features is its relationship with water: the Chiavona stream, a tributary of the Astico, powered grain mills for centuries, the first of which is documented as early as 1288. Along its course there are also small waterfalls that, although modest in scale, make for pleasant short walks, often signposted by local trails in the Vicenza foothills. Do not expect postcard-scale waterfalls: the value of these places lies more in their productive history and in the care with which they are now valued as small, accessible pockets of nature.
The gateway to the Val d'Astico and the plateau
Thanks to its direct border with Asiago, Calvene often works as a transit point or lower-altitude base for those wanting to explore the Sette Comuni plateau without immediately facing the climate and altitude of true mountain terrain. Its proximity to the Val d'Astico also opens the way towards Arsiero, Tonezza del Cimone and the Great War sites on the Vicenza front. It is not a well-equipped tourist service centre, but its location makes it a convenient stopover for those planning a broader itinerary across plain, foothills and mountain.
A small village, to be enjoyed slowly
With just over a thousand residents, Calvene remains an essentially agricultural and residential municipality, without large accommodation facilities or a wide commercial offer. Its Church of the Annunciation and small local art heritage deserve a quick visit, but the real appeal is the chance to walk calmly among hills, mills and hamlets without the tourist traffic of Asiago or other better-known destinations in the area. It is an honest place: it does not promise great thrills, but offers authenticity to those who know how to appreciate it.
